Fortune favours the brave. Such is life. More often than not we are reminded that football is life; so was the case when Morgan Mammila was tasked with leading Chippa United Football Club following Daine Klate’s precedented sacking.
A lot of doubters had drafted Morgan’s obituary as a coach before he could even take claim of the hot seat. They went as far as questioning his coaching credentials. Perhaps if he was taking charge of any other team in the PSL they would have been justified, but they shied off taking into cognisance the fact that he was about to lead one of the most unorthodox teams in the country – What’s their playing philosophy? Which system do they use? How do they approach the matches they play? It’s been 10 years since the team 1st gained promotion to the elite league and no one can provide solid answers to these, with their playing style varying, depending on who is in charge of the tactical board.
In a team where the coaching revolving door is turbocharged, coach Morgan has done what most didn’t expect – Not only did he manage to get a team that only had a solitary smash-and-grab victory in 7 games to win 3 on the trot, but he did all of that while implementing a playing style that is easy on the eye. Mind you he’s taking this risk well aware of how big a mission in the league it is winning 2 games in a row, let alone 3 and on top of that, whilst pleasing a trigger-happy owner. What level of bravery is that?
We might not know how long coach Morgan is gonna be at the helm. We might not even know if he is going to be on the bench in the next game, but his victory against Kaizer Chiefs proved to many that he backs himself to do the job better that people who might possess higher coaching qualifications. And sometimes that is all one needs in a world full of doubt.
