Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies returned to the country to complete their domestic season in empathic style following their unsuccessful trip to Morocco.
Sundowns defeated Coal City 7-0 away and showed why they are a forced to be reckoned with on the continent.
In the last season, both men and women teams won 3/3 trophies. Sundowns Ladies have already retained one and lost the COSAFA title and so is CAFWCL. The men had already lost the MTN 8 trophy, and are on course to defend the league title and still to compete in the Nedbank Cup.
“I’m not concerned [that Sundowns could not repeat last season’s successes]. It is what to expect when the level across the board goes up. You look at our local men’s league; the level has gone up. These things are what happens and football is reactive.”
Sundowns have not been hesitant to react when results have not been going their way on the men’s side but have kept the faith on coach Jerry Tshabalala on the women’s side. Sundowns ropped in Simone Connelly to assist Tshabalala with strength and conditioning training. The men’s team has seen the reshuffling in the coaching department, with Manqoba Mngqithi demoted to Senior coach role and Rulani Mokwena being made sole head coach.
In the ladies’ team, Motsepe felt the team needs to boost the playing squad by going to the market. “Im happy to see Shawn Bishop, Andisiwe [Mgcoyi] and Rhoda [Mulaudzi] from our academy are helping to develop the young future footballers in the Mamelodi Sundowns under 15’s and 13’s ladies’ teams.”
Motsepe added that Sundowns will also strengthen the ranks in the technical teams so that the team can continue to produce young players and promote ladies football in the country.
